Here’s a comment that I found on the Science Careers page : Graduate school (at least where I did it) prepares you best for a career in academia. Once one realistically looks at the job prospects for Ph.D.’s and post-docs actually getting a permanent position (they are pathetically low), it seems stupid that graduate school prepares students for a career in academia.
